Smart Cards! ... The government has re-named it from the “Australia Card” to the “Smart Card”. The “Australia Card” was originally an idea brought in by the Australian government as an identification card. There was a referendum on it, thus it did not go into practise as the Nation did not want one card with so much information about them, and they did not like the idea of just becoming a number to their government. ... So in the end the government got what they wanted, but by the people saying no to the “Australia Card” made it harder on everybody in the long run.
The “Smart Card” that is in question today is almost the same as what the government wished to introduce, but now it has a totally different purpose, it will still hold identification on it, but it is now also a form of payment.
The “Smart Card” has not yet been nationally introduced, in most cases it’s still being trailed in major cities, and only at participating stores, and companies. ...
Recently there was a merger between Australian Vendor and Global Smart Card Group, to promote an infrastructure for a future and now growing smart card industry.
