Alternative to the Causeway
Having ferries as an alternative way to get across Lake Ponchatrain would help to increase the life span of the Causeway Bridge as well as decreasing the time it takes to commute into New Orleans. The bridge needs to be taken care of because extraordinary amounts of people depend on the causeway to get to work, school, and home. On an average, thirty-five hundred vehicles travel across the bridge during a peak hour. (Causeway History) But an even more important reason is that it is currently the only way across Lake Ponchatrain from Mandeville and the surrounding areas north of New Orleans.
The Causeway Bridge consists of two twenty-four mile long spans, each with two lanes. “The twin spans of the Causeway are made of prestressed panels supported by over 9,000 concrete pilings.
