The argument entitled the Ghetto Defense is an argument about a young girl Lisa Morgan who is accused of murdering an innocent person for a pair of sneakers. The Defense Lawyer is this argument try's to play the "Ghetto Defense" on the jury as if to say, "she killed because she was brought up in that life style. When Francis Flaherity compares living in a ghetto to being in a war zone, it is very hard to imagine this statement as being true. He claims that Lisa suffers from a disease called PTSD. He adds that Morgan is "from a small group of inner city kids who suffers from tremendous intra-familial violence." This analogy of Lisa suffering from the same disease as those who were in wars is hard to comprehend.
"The Ghetto Defense" is an essay in which Flaherty uses a vast majority of tools to increase her reader's attention. She uses such tools as the Rhetorical question to make the reader ask him or herself if they could be responsible. However, this argument would not work in a society today with morality and values. The judicial system in America listens to these arguments and decides whether they are the reason that violence happens. Such ridicules arguments used in the courtrooms of America today are mental retardation, and the we are arguing about the ghetto made me do it. This argument might have done some good however, to raise people awareness of the penalties giving to poor urban citizens compared to the rich upper class citizens who "get a slap on the wrist for drunk driving." That is a major reason why this argument would never work in a society today. It doesn't matter if you are poor or rich, if you get caught drunk driving you get more than a wrist slap done to you. If Lisa Morgan killed an innocent civilian that Lisa Morgan should be put in jail. There is no excuse for murder; if you take someone else's life then you should be put in jail as well.
