Applied Exercise Physiology Assignment 1

1. The notions of laboratory testing and field testing of fitness components fall under four headings:
„h Identifying specific attributes: Fitness tests results indicate specific personal attributes that the athlete and coach can use to help determine the types of sports in which the athlete is best suited.
„h Identifying strengths and weaknesses: Fitness tests identify an individuals strengths and weaknesses for a particular sport or activity. This then helps in designing a specific training program.
„h Monitoring progress: Fitness testing should be taken at regular intervals so the coach and athlete can evaluate the effectiveness of the training program.
„h Providing motivation and incentive: Fitness tests can outline specific attributes, strengths and weaknesses. This provides strong motivation and incentive for athletes to keep training.

B) The advantages of field testing is that the equipment is readily available and inexpensive to buy and use. The disadvantages of field testing is that the results are only an estimate.
The advantage of laboratory testing is that they provide the most accurate indication of functional abilities. The disadvantage is that they require the use of expensive and sophisticated equipment, controlled environment and qualified personnel.

2. Fitness testing is beneficial to both athlete and coach because the coach can evaluate on his/her performance. The coach can then give the athlete feedback, this feedback is then used to improve performance by focussing on key points/areas that could be improved.

3. The main criteria to be considered when selecting a fitness test are:

„h Validity and...
