Baseball has always been one of America’s greatest pastimes. Much of baseball’s charm lies in its use of simple tools. ... Recently, there has been a controversy in baseball over the use of metal bats. Metal bats are being used from little leagues through the high school and college levels. Some believe that metal bats help advance the game of baseball, but, on the other hand, many believe that metal bats pose a threat to the safety of high school and college students who play the game. Thus, it is argued that the high school and college levels should turn to traditional wooden bats instead of the current metal ones. ... Through evaluating these specific criteria, we are better able to understand the beneficial reasons for adopting wooden bats into the high school and college levels of baseball. ... Metal bats cost more and there is a much larger variety of metal bats to choose from. Wood bats are much simpler and inexpensive. ... The difference in whether an athlete uses metal or wood bat can sometimes determine the competitiveness of the game. A game played with metal bats generally tends to be more offensive and have higher scores.
