Academics Vs Sports

It's hard these days to find a high school student who hasn't played some sport. This is most likely due to teachers and coaches putting a heavy emphasis on sports rather than the academics in which schools are based on. As a result of an increase in athletic interest, the academic achievements that high school student's attain is decreasing. Academics as a whole suffer, and less educational opportunities arise for the student in the future. Both participating in sports and also doing well academics would be ideal, but the challenge of being successful at both is rarely taken on by students. I believe that academic achievements should be more emphasized in high schools, than sports currently are.
In sports, most athletes would like to go on after high school to be a professional athlete. With the exception of golf and billiards, physical sports like football and hockey can deal out a fare amount of physical punishment. Whatever the sport though, fame and fortune is usually found by professional athletes. By pushing sports so much in high schools it allows student/athletes to believe that they may get to the professional level in their sport, just like their favorite pro did when they were young.
Students who aim to have a career in sports may never get there, and not having ever focused on their academics as much as sports they may be really lacking in that area. For example, I played ice hockey through half of my high school career. I really excelled in my sport; I starting off playing defense, I later moved to center and ended up playing right wing. I was so focused on my sport that I was nearly flunking out of school. While I had only a 2.0 to show for in school, I had gone to the Utah Winter Games, taking two gold medals. Later realizing the importance of my education I quit hockey and focused on my academics, and I graduated with a 3.23 GPA.
