Why I want to Serve a Mission

It seems like just yesterday that I was in primary singing "I Hope They Call Me on a Mission". I am still waiting to grow a foot or two. When people think about missionaries they usually picture a companionship of missionaries riding their bikes around and going door to door and stuff. I usually think about back in the day when I was younger how the missionaries would come over for dinner and they would usually perform magic tricks afterwards like pulling quarters out of mine and my brothers ears and they would always do that thumb thing. I always thought they were soooo cool. But it wasn't until I was about 16 years old that I began to understand what missionary work was really about. It was right after I became a priest and the missionaries needed someone to go on splits with them. So I went with them one night. I remember it was right before Christmas and we were delivering living Christmas cards to people that members had signed up. My companion and I had decided that he would do the talking at the first house to show me how it was done and I would talk at the second house and we would continue rotating like that. I remember being amazed at how easily and openly he could talk to people that he had never met or seen before about the gospel and Christ. We went on to the second house and after a bit of rehearsing on the doorstep I rang the doorbell. After a few minutes a crusty old man came to the door. I explained what we were doing and that we wanted to share the true meaning of Christmas from an old friend, his face lit up with joy. We put in the tape of the birth of Christ and I remember looking over at him while it was going and he had tears welling up in his eyes. I felt the spirit so strongly that night, and I knew from that point on, not only that I was going on a mission, but also that I wanted to go. Everyone has their own reasons for going on a mission.
