Voodoo

In today's society Voodoo is portrayed in a very negative light. It is depicted in movies and on television as some sort of cult. It is also believed that they perform satanic rituals such as raising people from the dead as zombies. What many fail to realize is that Voodoo is a religion. As in other religions Voodoo has one supreme god, priest and priestesses, and performed many different rituals. To truly understand the religion, one must understand its origin, its rituals, and where the negative view points stem from.
As the Africans were stripped from their country and brought into a foreign world, they had to hold on to their faith. As with many, when times get hard they usually turn to God. These Africans enslaved by the French held on to their religion of Voodoo. Their masters did not understand the rituals they performed. They did not want their slaves having any hope. They looked down upon them having faith and a religion. Those that practice the religion were often killed or sent to prison. They were view as animals, so why should an animal be allowed to worship. This is why many of their practices took place in the dark of night. While their masters were snug in their beds, the slaves had a chance to come together and praise their god. There as in the other religions was only one god.
There was a huge love for family involved in the Voodoo religion. It is believed that family spirits called Louas, passed down by parents, protected over these peoples. These family spirits represent all aspects of life, good, evil, health and reproduction. It is extremely important to recognize those family members that have passed. Those spirits that are ignored are dangerous, where as the ones that are acknowledged are helpful. These spirits are usually given gifts of food, and drink.
