The Effects Of Outreach On Your Heart

To any normal teenager spring break is a time to let loose and party, but for me spring break means something quite different. For the past three years, I have dragged my feet out of bed at the dreadful hour of 5:30 A.M to the sounds of pots clanging and the voices of women speaking a language I don't fully understand. The day starts out with a foreman meeting. We set our goals for the day; basically we decide how much of our house we want to get done. People always ask, "What did you do for spring break?" And when I answer "I went to Mexico," they assume it was to party. For me, saying I went to Mexico has a whole different meaning than what they expect. Going to Mexico means helping those less fortunate than I am, and getting to know more about myself and what type of person I want to be when I grow up.
Going to Mexico teaches me that in order to build a house you need a strong foundation, this lesson applies to life as well. I had been going to Mexico since my freshmen year so going my Junior year seemed no different, but in a huge way it changed drastically. My Junior year I decided to be a student foreman. Not knowing that being a foreman could change my life so much, I prepared myself for the trip as usual. I gathered all my tools together and struggled to get everything I would need for a week into my bag. The past two years, tools were the most important thing in that bag, this year was immensely different, the tools did not even come out of my bag. In order to build a house you need tools, but my job this week was not to build but to guide those around me. The first few days were a learning process. Standing back and guiding versus building was a huge change. I learned more that week than the two previous.
One lesson I learned is the importance of patience, which is valuable beyond belief. Trying to build a house takes more patience than I remembered from the previous years. Team work is another lesson that will not be forgotten. If...
