One of the most profound experiences in my life over the past four years or so has been my introduction to electronic music and rave culture. ... The typical image most people get when they hear the word “rave” is a bunch of kids off in an abandoned warehouse somewhere doing drugs amidst the wailing of synthesized music. ... The mantra of rave culture, as it were, is “PLUR”. This is an acronym standing for Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect – the ideals that supposedly lie at the core of the rave scene. PLUR is present in many aspects of rave culture, at least as a slogan of sorts. ... A search for “PLUR” on the Google Internet search engine comes up with over forty-six thousand hits, nearly all of which reference the rave community in some fashion. One site explaining the acronym goes so far as to call it the “four pillars” of the rave community .
A closer look at the rave scene, then, reveals there is at least some substance behind the bright lights, loud music, and drug abuse one sees when scratching the surface. Vocal rave proponents claim that the parties are not about drugs, but instead focus on the music, the dancing, or something less tangible – the “vibe”. ... Even the use of ecstasy in the rave setting can, in a way, be interpreted and understood from a spiritual perspective.
