Religion and Medical Issues (a) Describe the treatments available to help infertile couples to have children. In the UK, infertility is seen as one of the most modern stuttering problems with as many as 10% of people here having problems. Over recent years medical technology and science has recognised these problems and has tried to come up with solutions which is most cases prove successful. These solution are called ‘embryo technology.’ ‘Embryo technology,’ is a way to help people overcome fertility problems in that it helps couples have children which to most is seen as a miracle however some religious people see these techniques as doctors playing the role of god. There are many ways of ‘embryo technology,’ available for people to try: IVF treatment or how it is scientifically known ‘in-vitro fertilisation.’ What happens in these circumstances is that an egg is taken from the mother and is fertilised outside the womb using either her partners sperm or from a donor. After this it is replaced back into the womb in hope that the fertilised egg will grow into a baby. Artificial insemination by husband or AIH is another solution to infertility. The way is quite simple in that the partners sperm is put into his wife or girlfriend in a mechanical way thus then hoping for the sperm to fertilise an egg. AID (Artificial insemination by donor) is very similar to AIH in that the only difference is that instead of the woman’s partner it is an anonymous partner which is then placed into the woman mechanically. The next way to solve infertility is egg donation. This method is when an egg is donated by another woman and fertilised by IVF. The male partners sperm is used and it is then placed into the girl partners womb. Embryo donation is also quite similar to egg donation. The only difference is that both the egg and sperm come from donors and are fertilised by IVF.
