Rabbinics Guidlines

The idea of changing Jewish law has existed through centuries. The most popular method the rabbis have chosen to do this is through the process known as Halakhik Question and Answer. This means that one large issue is brought up and written down and then a group of Rabbis work together to find a way to answer this issue in a way that the most amount of people would be content with. Then they write down the procedure they have taken to receive their answer, they write down all of the different sources and opinions they received, and then they formulate it all into an answer. On their way to finding an answer the rabbis usually bump into a few minor issues in which they also answer along the way.
The main issue here is, what aliyot are women called up for and how should the daughter of a Kohen or Levi be called to the torah. Some of the rabbis think that a daughter of a Kohen or Levi should be able to get the Kohen or Levi aliyah respectively and some say that they should get the Yisrael aliyah, but almost all of them agree that when the woman is married she follows the lineage of her husband and does the same aliyah that her husband does. As the Teshuvah goes on it discusses what should happen, why, what the proof text is, and who or what are the sources.
The secondary issues that arise from this Teshuvah are whether a Kohen or Levi who is deformed or injured in some way can receive the Kohen or Levi aliyah. The reason this is an issue is because if the Kohen or Levi is not able to get the Kohen or Levi aliyah then this would prove that the ability to get the Kohen or Levi aliyah is based on the ability of a person to perform a sacrifice because an injured or deformed Kohen or Levi would not be able to perform a sacrifice. And if the ability to get a Kohen or Levi aliyah is based on whether or not you can perform a sacrifice then a women can't get the aliyah because she can't perform a sacrifice.
