Should prayer or religion be allowed in our public school systems? ... If students were allowed, or even forced to pray in public schools, who would be responsible to decide what religious beliefs to practice? How would we avoid offending those students whose beliefs were the ones that were regarded as the bogus or incorrect religion? ... “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion… or prohibiting the free exercise there of” (Nord, 111). ... Jefferson always said, the clause against establishment of religion by law was intended to erect “a wall of separation between church and state” (Nord, 115).
There are many different types of controversies going on about religion in our school system. Student prayers, Graduation prayers and Teaching about religion are just a few. ... But in 1992 the Courts found prayer at public school graduation ceremonies violates the establishment clause and is there fore unconstitutional (News Hour Extra). ...
Many of the parents that want prayer and religion in school think that these children do not have the right to any type of prayer in school, but they do.
