CALVINISM VS. LUTHERANISM Both Martin Luther and John Calvin will go down in the history books as great theologians who were very influential leaders of the Protestant Reformation. Both Luther and Calvin departed from the mainstream religion (Roman Catholicism) of the day and took their own stances on religion. Though both were opposed to the Roman Catholic Church, their own ideas of religion were different from one another. Luther’s theology was focused on the doctrine of justification by faith. Calvin on the other hand, paid more attention to other doctrines and in modern day religion is known as the “father” of the doctrine of pre-destination. In this essay I will seek to highlight the key aspects of Lutheranism and Calvinism and then compare the two. Though Martin Luther is romanticized today as an ancient super Christian, he was a very strong tempered man who was known to use vulgar language. Luther was ordained as a priest in the year 1507 and began a life of constant devotion and study of the Word of God. Luther’s theology primarily focused on the structure of the Church and the morality of the Church.
