Joan of Arc

The death of Joan of Arc is one of history's greatest tragedies. That such a brave and honourable young woman should be put to death for her beliefs is a terrible shame. She was fighter until the end and refused to have her beliefs corrupted by the Catholic Church whose word at the time was law.

Joan was born into a born family and is believed to have had four brothers and sisters. She worked hard for her family was poor and she never learnt to read and write. When she was about thirteen years old in 1425 she began hearing voices. She believed that the voices belonged to Saint Catherine, Saint Margaret, and Saint Michael and these mysterious voices were telling her to help the Dauphin, Charles in his fight against England and Burgundy. Although he was by rights the king of France he had not yet been crowned. The English held the city of Reims where the French kings were traditionally crowned and so Charles was unable to hold a coronation ceremony.
When Joan went to Vaucouleurs to help Charles she was initially laughed away. In February of 1429, however, she was allowed to see the Dauphin. Charles was desperate. The Hundred Years War had lasted ninety-two years and although he did not know this would last for another twenty-four. He sent her with troops to Orleans where the English were holding a siege on the city. Following commands from her voices Joan was able to inspire the French troops and they managed to end the siege and drive the English away. This is how Joan came to have her title of ‘Maid of Orleans' because she literally saved the city of Orleans. She also won another battle, the Battle of Patay and from here she could safely take the Dauphin to Reims were he was crowned. Joan then suggested that the French take back English-controlled Paris. Although Charles was a first interested in this plan but he had to draw back his army because he was low on money. Joan and her family were named as nobility...
