The Biblical character Joshua is probably best known to most people as the leader of the Israelites at the Battle of Jericho; and it is true that he was a successful military leader. However, Joshua was a lot more than this. ... Because of these qualities God blessed Joshua in many ways. He selected Joshua to be the successor of Moses and continued to bless Joshua and the Israelites as long as Joshua remained faithful to Him. To understand the special relationship that Joshua had with God, and vice versa, it is necessary to examine some of the events in Joshua’s life that provide evidence of his unfailing devotion to God, obedience to God and faith in God.
Joshua was born in Egypt while the Hebrews were slaves to Pharaoh. Joshua is first introduced to us in an account in the Book of Numbers. Joshua is one of 11 spies Moses chose to go into the land of Canaan and see what the Israelites would expect when and if they crossed over the Jordan into Canaan. ... Of the 11 spies only Joshua and Caleb believe that the Israelites would be able to defeat the fortified cities and the giants. Joshua reported that “If the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us. ... After all he saw the same things in Canaan that the other spies saw, but Joshua saw them through the eyes of an obedient and faithful servant of God.
