Gospel

Matthew, Mark and Luke are called thesynoptic gospels. They relate the life of ourLord Jesus Christ. The word "synoptic" means"seeing the whole together or at a glance."These gospels relate essentially the sameincidents, but with some characteristic dif-ferences. Each evangelist wrote from hisindividual point of view under the inspira-tion of the Holy Spirit. Matthew portraysChrist as the Messiah-King; Mark portraysChrist as the Servant at work; Luke portraysChrist as the Son of Man. The fourth gospel,John, not included in the synoptics, portraysJesus as the eternal Son of God. The threesynoptic gospels make the humanity of theLord Jesus evident, but in no way excludeHis deity. There are three referencesto him by Paul in his epistles: Colossians4:14, "Luke the beloved physician and Demasgreet you."; II Timothy 4:11, "Only Luke iswith me"; Philemon 24, "Demas, Lucas, myfellow laborers."Although these are theonly three places where Luke is mentionedby name, there are references in the bookof Acts, in which he includes himself amongthe companions of Paul by changing thepronoun "they" to the first person plural "we."It is most probable that Luke was of Greekorigin. His name is Gentile-Lucanus, andshortened to Lucas or Luke. The same personwho wrote the book of Acts also wrote thegospel of Luke and is the only Gentile writerin the canon of Scripture. Some think thatLuke was a proselyte to Judaism before hisconversion to Christianity because of his in-timate acquaintance with the opinions andcustoms of the Jews. There is no record asto when he became a Christian. It is possiblethat he and Paul became friends at Tarsusduring their years of schooling, and remainedfriends to the end of Paul's ministry and death. After the death...
