In the article "Giottos Annunciation in the Arena Chapel, Padua" the author tries to convey to the reader the idea that the fresco of the "Annunciation" is extremely different in the way it was made, opposed to the other frescos in the Arena Chapel that he created. The author, Laura Jacobus tries to relate the fresco to the devotional practices of in the Arena Chapel during the Golden Mass, an event that took place to celebrate the Annunciation of the Virgin. She states that the fresco of the Annunciation that Giotto created at this chapel relates to the theatrical performances during this particular mass and that is reason why they are different from the other frescoes at the chapel. The supporting elements she provides includes the heavy influences of the patron of the church during the time period, the similar stylistic elements the fresco contained to that of the theatrical performances practiced during the Golden Mass, and the many differences between the fresco of the Annunciation and other frescoes in the series at the Arena Chapel.
One example that supports the authors' thesis is the high influence that the patron had over the church during the time when Giotto created these frescoes. The author explains in the essay that he patron at the Arena Chapel had wanted to promote the Annunciation as one of the most important events in the bible. The ceremony that would be performed would be of the Golden Mass and was extrememly dramatic in nature. Instead of the normal mass, in the church at Padua it would be practiced in a type of theatrical performance.
