The League of Nations was created shortly after the first world war. It’s purpose was to form a collective security amongst the major powers, as well as the minors, and to avoid the possibility of another war. On paper the league of nations looked like a marvelous idea and a great way to maintain the peace. In reality the league would end in failure, although it did have some minor success. The failure of the league was inevitable almost as soon as it was formed. The League relied on all the allied powers to join and stand together on all international issues, however, here was one major problem. The strongest nation in the world, the United States of America never signed the Covenant of the League, handing a weakening blow before the league could get started. The League would also encounter to major crisis along it’s way, which in turn would lead to the humiliation and discrediting of the major powers and eventually the collapse of the league. The first disaster happened in Manchuria which was invaded by Japan in 1931. The second disaster arose shortly after, in Abyssinia where the Italian invaded in late 1934(Falk 17.) These two disasters along side with the lack of US membership to the league would be the keys to the collapse of the League of Nations. At the end of the first world war the US stood alone in the world as the major; since, the previous major powers were in great debt to the American. Therefor in order for the league to be truly successful it would need the outright support of the US, Unfortunately this was not the case.
