Do You Know Him Or Do You Know About Him?
I could begin writing this essay on who Jesus Christ is telling you that he was born in a manger to the virgin Mary in Bethlehem on a cold December morning. These are all the facts that anyone could tell you about Jesus. Just because you know the facts about Jesus doesn't mean that you actually know who he really is. I can tell you where the president of the United States was born and who his parents are but this doesn't mean that I actually know him. To me, Jesus Christ is an educator, a savior, unique in appearance and talents, and someone I want to see face to face. Only when we understand Jesus Christ can we appreciate how he can truly change our lives.
Psalms 78:5 says "For he gave is laws to Israel and commanded our fathers to teach them to their children." Mary and Joseph often took Jesus to the temple as a child. Jesus was teaching others at a young age about God and his laws. When Jesus was 12 years old, he came with his parents to Jerusalem for the annual Passover festival they attended each year. After the celebration was over, they started home to Nazareth, but Jesus stayed behind. His parents assumed that he was with friends and among the travelers on the first day. When he didn't show up that evening, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. Three days later, they discovered him in the temple among the teachers of the law discussing deep questions and amazing everyone with his understanding and answers. From this point on, Jesus made it a priority to educate others. He used parables when speaking to crowds. These parables help us to understand spiritual truth by using everyday situations and relationships. Jesus educates us in the ways of God.
Everyone's name has a meaning. The name Jesus means "Savior". He came to earth to save us because we cannot save ourselves from the consequences of sin. No matter how good we are, we cannot eliminate the sinful nature in all of us. Only Jesus can do that. Jesus didn't...
