Bethel
Bethel German Colony, located forty-eight miles west of Hannibal on the banks of the North River in Shelby County, Missouri, is still home today to descendants of its early 19th century settlers. It is said to be one of the most successful communal societies in the United States. With a population of 132 residents, Bethel hosts frequent festivals, workshops, and seminars celebrating its agricultural, cultural and social history throughout the year. I had the opportunity to visit this minute town and the hospitality its residents showed me had to have dated back to the unique concepts on which this Colony was founded in 1834. Of course I had the opportunity to learn a lot about this small German town that was a colony up until the late 19th century. I learned of the history and the religion of Bethel, what it was based on as well as their beliefs. Most importantly I was able to see these ideas in person. In this paper I have decided to not only portray the facts and the history behind this town, but also to share my little adventure to Bethel. And of course I have put pictures in with the text to help you experience Bethel as well!
I want to start out by sharing with you the trip that I experienced while gathering my research material on this project. I first heard about this town from my TA. I was able to find enough information to locate exactly were I was going. I decided to take a friend of mine named Leslie to share this experience. We left in the morning and it took us about an hour and a half from my hometown to reach Bethel. You will be able to see from the pictures it was somewhat of a drizzly day. When we arrived, we went to a small restaurant in what we assumed to be the center of the town. Oddly enough we were right. Inside we decided to eat and as expected, it was a perfectly cooked, home-style meal.
