A Concealed Rebuking Message

A painting is like words that are not spelled out but rather hidden within images. One form of painting is classical surrealism or social surrealism, which often contains negative imagery. Some people see the concealed meanings and others cannot. By looking closely at an image and analyzing it, we often feel that the artist has a critical or rebuking message. Surrealist painters try to convey ideas through painting, just as singers try to convey feelings through singing songs. Federico Castellon is one of the greatest surrealist painters of the twentieth-century. His ideas in paintings have a religious influence. He shows his Spanish culture – the importance of Christianity. He lived in Spain for the first seven years of his life before moving to Brooklyn, New York. Spain is one of the most religious countries in the world, and Christianity is very important in Spanish culture. One of Castellon's paintings is Supplication, painted in about 1939, where he clearly criticizes humanity though illustrations that parallel with the Bible.
In this painting, there are two images of men. The one on the left side is a naked man covering his body with his arms, looking at his back, sitting on a light-green cloth, and begging. On the other side, is a man wearing a red shirt with his arms wide open, facing toward the seashore. There is a dark cloud on the top right corner. These details of the image clearly have Christian religion influence. For instance, the image of the naked man looks like Adam, in the same way he reacted when God confronted him about what he did – ashamed and guilty.
