The American Church
The American Church can sometimes be a deceivable place. It can be seen in a macro perspective in the sense that it has a functional structure. Then we may ask what exactly is the function of the Church? There are many different factors that make up a Church. According to Ritzer, the Church has four characteristics that follow the McDonaldization process: efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control. Within in the Church you can see that it is functional, yet sometimes it can have conflict. One factor that can lead to conflict within the church is education. Let us look at the four processes of McDoanldization within the Church.
Efficiency in the Church is the set pattern of the procedures. Ritzer talks about a prepackaged "welcome". They seem like they are interested, but in reality they could care less. They put on a front to get you involved in what they need, not why you are actually there. There is a show going on at church when you arrive, and you are the audience. Some Churches focus on what they look like to outsiders; the regular attendees are sometimes overlooked. Going to Church can become a once a week pattern or a routine.
Next is calculability. Numbers are everything to a church. The more people they have the more money they will receive. When their attendance declines there has to be a reason and they want to know how to fix it. "Dying churches often resort to ‘quality not quantity' argument in order to justify their decline as providing evidence of their faithfulness." (Ritzer, 152) There is also the problem that because one church is inclining another has to be declining. The people are leaving one community to go to another. So is it really good when your church is inclining? You could be the reason that another is declining.
