Influences of a Parent
"In an ideal world your family comes together each night to sit, eat, laugh, and share some stories about the day. We picture smiling faces chatting over a healthy meal as a father scoops mashed potatoes onto the plate of a not-fidgeting toddler and a teenager actually helps himself to some vegetables," (Family Dinner: More than half the parents make it a nightly affair). Then we come back to reality. When was the last time the average household sat down at dinner together to eat a home-cooked meal? Some people would guess yesterday or sometime last week. "Dinner has changed in the last 30 years, 51 percent of those polled say their family eats dinner together seven nights a week" then the percentage drops down to "Thirty-four [who] say they eat together around three times a week," (Family Dinner: More than half the parents make it a nightly affair). Almost every family ate together nightly about thirty years ago. It was uncommon to eat at different times or even different meals. The mother prepared the meals, the father expected it, and the children were there. The way that parents have brought up their children has changed. Family dinnertime is one example of how parents have changed within an amount of time. This change of parenting from earlier generations to now has resulted in a new way of life for the modern kid. A few major categories of change have been the amount of freedom given to a child, the power a child has to make their own decisions, and the amount of attention given to a child by its parent.
You would think sixteen year olds would have a set time to be home but actually these days at sixteen a child is more likely not to receive a curfew from their parents, developing more freedom for that child. With the newly shared freedoms kids have become careless and tend to get themselves in trouble. As much as...
