Patriarchy literally translated means “rule by the father”. It is the complete opposite of matriarchy, which means that women are in charge and head of the family. In general when using the term Patriarchy it is in reference to a social situation where men are dominant over women in any of the following areas; wealth status and power. Patriarchy is linked to a set of ideas, a “patriarchal ideology” which acts to explain and justify the dominance and attributes it to inherent natural differences between men and women.
