Pet Ownership

Poised and Self-sufficient
For more then 4,000 years men and women have been finding satisfaction in the domestication of pets (The New Encyclopedia of the Cat, page 3). Historically the primary choice of pet ownership has been the cat and dog. The dog's ability to protect and serve its owner, alone with the dog's outgoing fun-loving sociable personality makes it an ideal pet. But, the cat's intelligent self-sufficient personality, alone with its ability has a predator makes it the better pet for a fast paced lifestyle.
The cat is preferred as a pet over the dog in many cultures. Dr. Bruce Fogle writes in The New Encyclopedia of the Cat that the cat surpasses the dog as man's most popular animal in the United States and Britain (The New Encyclopedia of the Cat, page 4). Agreeing with Dr. Bruce Fohle, Steve Duno writes in Guide to Cat Care about the cat's superior population.
"Today's domestic cat has become the pet of choice for millions of people around the world. In the United States alone, more than 30 million pet cats now eclipse the dog population by several million, with the gap growing even wider each day" (Guide to Cat Care, page 3).
Even though the popularity of the cat is greater then that of the dog; the cat does not offer the companionship that the dog offers. The outgoing fun-loving personality of the dog is unequaled by any pet, let alone the unsociable cat. Furthermore, the dog's affectionate personality, that is ideal for companionship, makes us feel loved, secure, and important.
Although the cat is not the better companion, the cat grooms its-self. Cleaning its own body with its tongue, the cat instinctively remains clean throughout its life. All animals groom themselves, but social animals like the dog groom one another as a way of maintaining bonds within their group. But, the dog through the years has become more dependent on their owner, because of changes in breeding....
