Advertising
Advertising is an action to promote selling by influencing or persuading people to buy a product. Advertising comes in variety of Medias for example, television, magazines, radios, and billboards. Some advertisement targets just specific group of people, while others are more general. However some advertisements are corruptive. They make us feel inferior, and let us "realize" that we need their products. Advertising, although comes in different forms, they all serves one main purpose, to persuade consumers.
In advertising, there are three basic rhetorical appeals; ethos logos, and pathos. Ethos is form of persuasion that uses a credible source of information to convince their customer. The other two are pathos and logos which are rhetoric persuasive appeal to emotion and reason respectively. Although we often find the combination of ethos, pathos and logos in one advertisement, but ethos is the most effective rhetorical appeal.
In ethos, rhetors usually appear unbiased and reliable as they deal with the controversial subject. However rhetors in ethos can be more advantaged if they have pre-existing reputation in the subject. For example is the advertisement of Converse Basketball shoes by NBA player Dennis Rodman. The advertisement on magazine shows Rodman Basketball shoes by Converse. No matter what people think about Dennis Rodman in society, but when Rodman talked about Basketball, he provides a good source of credibility.
Another factor that makes ethos effective is teenagers like to imitate their idols. Most of teenagers' idols are champions in sports, for example Tony Hawk, the skateboard champion. There is an advertisement about the Play Station games named "Tony Hawk the Pro Skater". This is an effective way to promote selling of the skateboard video game. Teenage skaters will be influenced to buy Hawk's products because Hawk is their idol.
