Adolescent Sexuality
Sexuality is more than what you do with another person sexually. That is, sexuality is not only about having sex, or taking part in sexual activities. Sexuality is also about how the person you feel you are, your body, how you feel as a boy or girl, man or woman, the way you dress, move and speak, the way you act and feel about other people. These are all parts of who you are as a person, from your birth until you die—your whole lifetime long. Everyone has his or her own way of being or feeling sexual. Our sexuality is a natural and healthy part of who we are. It's not about what you do; it's about who you are and how you live.
Looking at research on teen sexuality leaves little doubt that there is a need for programs to educate teen on their sexuality. American teens are more sexually active in the late 1990s than at any time in the past. Despite overwhelming evidence of teenage sexual activity and a host of resulting problems, most American teens do not receive comprehensive sexuality education in their junior high schools and high schools. In addition, many of their parents are unprepared, unable or unwilling to provide them the information they need. While we still are a long way from agreeing on what should be done, there is evidence that the public is at least becoming aware of the issues (Flanigan). For example when a 1993 survey conducted by the University of Kentucky Survey Research Center asked a random sample of Kentucky adults to indicate the importance of nine specific youth and family issues in their communities, "having sex at a young age" was considered the most important issue. It was rated as being very important by 79 percent of the respondents. The issues that come arise from uneducated teens having sex are pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
