Family Life in the Twelfth Century
Family played a very important role in the lives of people in the twelfth century. Many fathers went to great lengths to prepare their children for the life they were destined to live. Children molded their lives to their parent's expectations and needs, similarly, many of the events that occur in life are determined by the events or beliefs of a family member's life. By using The Story of Abelard's Adversities as a source, this essay will show the importance of family during the twelfth century.
Children were the pride of their parents. Parents taught their children all of the knowledge they had acquired. "As he loved me the more, being I was his first born, so he saw to it that I was carefully instructed." Through teaching children all of the knowledge that the parents had acquired, the parents allowed their children to expand their natural talents and characteristics. Abelard was able to take his knowledge that he gained from his father through love and enroll with a master named William of Champeaux. He eventually became seeked by students of his own. With Berengairus's knowledge instilled in Abelard, he was able to have students who seeked out his lectures. He came upon "financial gain and glory" . Berengairus had used his pride for his children to allow them to excel in their lives. Family, being of great importance, gives children an edge on life regardless of the outcome.
Factors that occur during ones life determine the events of a loved ones life. Throughout The Story of Abelard's Adversities, Abelard stops his life to tend to the needs of his family members. His mother, which whom he had loved greatly, asked Abelard to return home while she entered into the religious life. Although Abelard was experiencing many troubles, he returned home to be with his mother. This shows the great importance of family during the twelfth century.
