One about a grown man and his nostalgic look at his first and perhaps deepest love.

Every April in Beaufort, South Carolina, when the scent of lilacs mindless with the sea air, Landon Carter is taken back to his senior year at Beaufort High. A stereotypical rambunctious teenage of the 1950・s, trying hard to ignore the imminent responsibilities of adulthood. With nothing particularly outstanding on his high school records, Landon is roped into performing for the annual Christmas play. Along with him, in the cast, is the quiet, plain, and bible-toting daughter of the minister, Jamie Sullivan. With these two contrasting protagonists, the love story now begins. The two then strive to overcome the obstacles that life throws at them. However, they did not know that life would give them the biggest obstacle of all. Forcing Landon to look into the depths of his heart and turn onto the road to manhood.

Maintaining a delicate balance of humour and sentiment, the novel is told from the point of view of a 17-year-old Landon. Sparks・s tone is effortless and even throughout the course of this coming-of-age tearjerker. With authentic resonance and a boyish innocence, the author brings to life the urgency of love in its purest form and the impermanence of life.
