After The First Death
All novels can be classed into a certain genre, depending on the style of the novel. As we read a novel of a particular genre, we have certain expectations of that genre. The extent, to which these expectations are met, differs depending on the novel. Readers may prefer the text to mainly conform to their expectations as they may feel comfort in, or enjoyment out of making their own predictions and assumptions as to the storyline of the novel. They also may identify with the values of the usual main character of that genre, and therefore may prefer their novel to be typical of the genre it is categorised under. Readers may also find novels that conform to their expectations of a genre more of a pleasure to read as they may like and feel more satisfied with the resolution of the storyline to be a predictable ending. Some readers however may prefer a novel to, to some extent disrupt their expectations of the genre as they discover it be more suspenseful and thought provoking. Novels that disrupt our expectations of a genre also can be surprising, may create curiosity and promote an active role in the reader. Therefore novels, which both conform to and disrupt our expectations, combine elements which readers like, to construct an extremely engaging novel.
A perfect example of a novel, which both conforms to and disrupts our expectations of its genre, is After the First Death, by Robert Cormier, categorised under the thriller genre. Whilst many characteristics of the thriller genre are present in the novel, there are numerous characteristics, which are not common to the thriller genre resulting in an exceedingly engaging novel. This is evidential through characterisation, point of view, structure, plot and resolution of the novel.
