She hasn’t seen her sister in a long time, so it’s a surprise to Stella that Blanche is there. Blanche explains to Stella that they have lost their old, plantation home, the Belle Reve. The aftermath of loosing the house was tremendous which she tells Stella that they gave her leave of absence do to all her unfortunate circumstances. Even though Stella seems to welcome her sister, her husband Stanley, does not. He says he does not trust Blanche right from the start. Blanche is starting to feel uncomfortable with the smallness of the little apartment and the rudeness of Stanley. Blanche doesn’t approve of Stanley anyhow, she thinks he’s too low class for her. She thinks that Stella should be with some one that has money and a reputation, more or less higher class.
