About How Poetry Can Reclect The Changing Cultural Identity Of Australia
As a developing country Australia's comparative isolation from overseas influences have severed the umbilical cord from our mother country England , or more generally Europe. As colonial poet were gradually forced to neglect and disregard Eurocentric concepts and ideaologies in a struggle to make poetry connect with the new environment, Australia. New diverse perceptions of our counrty were established and the developing socio- culture of Australia emerged to reveal and expose our own cultural identiy.
The advancements of a dominant anglo-celtic culture were enriched and innovative poetry forms also challenged the protective motherly need for conforming a a culture. To demonstrate how chagning times and developing Australia influenced poetry we can examine work of poets including - peter porter,dorethy mckellar, and charles harpur - poets from various periods in time. The choices of these poems also show how the establishment and complexity of poetry from the colonial throught to the modern perdiod has lead to the contempory form of modern electic, emblematic of Australia.
During the colonial period many poets including charles harpur, mary hammyfoot, Adam lindsay-Gordon and Henry Kendall.These poets wrote poetry that reflected our national identity throught out the years and depicts that change that has occured as Australia has altered both physically and in national unity.
In conclusion it is explicity obvious that our own present day national culture depends on a clearer recognition of envirnomnetal values and an understading of austrlaian history and Tradiotions. These notions are evident throughtout poetry in our time and previous periods also.
