The story “All Quiet On The Western Front” written by Erich Maria Remarque is a remarkable story about a 19-year-old man, Paul Baumer, who after listening to a teachers (Kantorek) patriotic speeches decided with a few friends to enlist into the German army. But after weeks of harsh training, and living a brutal life on the front they all decided that joining the war was no longer an honorable or good idea. ... Paul claims that when peacetime arrives that he will be ruined for it, for all he knows is the war. ... All the report read for that day, the day of Paul’s tragic end, was “All Quiet on The Western Front”.
The beginning of the novel talks about Paul and his friends being a part of the front line and various hardships that comes with fighting in the war. The reason why they all joined the war was due to the influence Kantorek had on them. ... After fighting in the front lines the boys realize that it was a bad idea to join and all live in constant fear of death. ... He goes on to say that on the front the men are transformed into “Human Animals”. ... With out these “Animal Instincts” many men would die on the front. We get to see some of these instincts as Paul and his company go to the front to place barbwire. ... He thought what he was fighting for was a just cause, but once he got on the front lines he was let down, and found out fighting in the war wasn’t what it was cracked up to be. ... All the memories he has of childhood are just mere shadows. ... The time they spend together before Paul goes to the front is uncomfortable and all they speak of is his mother’s cancer and how it has gotten worse. ... Paul shows a little bit of sympathy for his mother as he decides on not giving away all her cakes, even though he is not hungry.
Paul’s most traumatic experience happens not to long after he re joins the front. ... But soon after all the feasting was done, it was back to the war, and that is when Kropp and Paul get their injuries.
