The Smiths

EXT. SMITH’S HOUSE.

1. WS of a house at the end of a tiled path.It’s night and the wind is howling,tress are
shaking.

2. A foot appears.It steps in from right side of frame and steps firmly onto the tiled path.

3. Suddenly,a glass bottle appears from top of screen and smashes onto the path.
A figure starts to walk up the path toward the house.It is obvious to the viewer now
that the figure is a grown man.

INT. SMITH’S HOUSE.

4. A young boy and a much older lady are sitting on a tattered and torn old lounge,watching a small television in the corner of the room.By the look of the room it is obvious that this family are very poor.There is a small table by the side of the lounge with some plastic cups and an ashtray sitting on the top.The ashtray is full of ciggarette butts.

5. Suddenly,the front door is thrown open violently and slams against the side of the
wall.A figure walks through the open doorway and begins to stumble and swear.
We notice that this is the man from outside and he is drunk and appears angry.
He stares directly at the mother and the young boy. It is apparent now that this man is
the boy’s father. They are both terrified.

6. (POV of mother and child)
The dad stumbles over to a small table behind the lounge and picks up a letter that is
among some other bits of loose paper. He begins to read it.
It is a letter from the young boy’s school,informing his parents on his lack of attendance

7. As the dad reads the letter,we notice both the mother and the young boy begin to
cry.They both know that one of them are in for a beating tonight.

8. (NEUTRAL SHOT,DIRECTLY BEHIND THE DAD)
He walks towards the lounge,shouting and swearing at both of them.The mother is
