The Treasure Of Sierra Madre
Money Isn’t Everything
We have all heard that money can’t buy happiness. Most of the time, we like to believe its true. In the movie The Treasure of Sierra Madre, Howard, Dobbs, and Curtain learned just how accurate the old saying is. The three men face hardships unthinkable by today’s standards and come into great wealth. However, though they came into great wealth, neither man ever found happiness.
Dobbs became avaricious in his thirst for gold when he thought of the collected total between the three men. The thought was obviously more than he could bear, and he through a series of events did away with each one of them. He stole the gold and sealed his fate as a crook. Curtain and Howard knew that wealth wasn’t found in material things; Dobbs fell into the trap of jealousy and greed. Curtain and Howard had admirable intentions when asked what to do with their share. They each responded to live comfortably as long as they could with their gold. They never expected to become instantly happy and to have their life fall into place.
Dobbs searched in all the wrong places to find wealth. First by panhandling, then by recklessly throwing his money around in the Mexican lottery. He went so far as to shoot his partner, Curtain, and hoard his share for himself. He ultimately learned that money is not everything, and it certainly cannot buy happiness.
Though they lost their shares, Curtain and Howard still managed to end up better than they did before they started. Each man sought after their dreams and the audience is led to believe they found their happiness. Each man has an infinitely different perspective about what treasure is now. Through their hardships, they discovered that life experiences and happiness are more valuable than any precious material.
