The Mission
The thing that I noticed the most in this movie that we talked about in class was the combat for power between the church and the government. That seemed to be a central issue. I could see what a powerful influence the church had on things. I could tell that the man that the man they called "Your Eminence" was a very powerful figure. I wasn't sure what "Eminence" meant, so I looked it up and it was a high church official, just below the pope. This religious figure in the movie was well respected and had a lot of authority. People had to show him the proper respect and he had the ability and power to make important decisions. He also had the authority to punish people. At one point in the movie he made the threat to excommunicate someone, which we talked about in class. These religious figures held a lot of power.
I also saw some of the religious beliefs of this time displayed in this movie. One thing that really stuck out to me was when Robert De Niro had to suffer a penance after he killed his brother. He felt that he had to suffer some kind of punishment to atone for his wrongdoing. This shows a common belief by that Catholics at that time. They could not just receive God's grace; they had to do something to earn it. I also saw the desire to spread Christianity in the New World in this movie. The Jesuits set up a mission in order to convert the inhabitants of the New World to their religion. This was a primary goal at that time.
Another thing I noticed from the movie was the disagreement to how the new land should be operated. The Jesuit priests wanted to share everything equally in the community. They said that this was the way that the early church did it. This was another thing that we talked about in class. The people at that time were trying to figure out what the best way to run their society and economy was. Some felt that there should be ranking and the ones that are educated should hold the wealth and power, and...
