Group Report for The Mosquito Coast
In the movie Mosquito Coast, the main character Allie Fox left America for a couple different reasons. The group felt that some of these reasons where as follows. They thought that Allie saw the States as a capitalist and commercialized country that does not think of necessities. He feels they throw away the things that are necessary and buy the things that are not needed. He also says that people make a leaving on crime and he is appalled at the high crime rate. Allie also feels that the American people eat when they are not hungry or thirsty, therefore wasting food that some people see as precious necessity. The group also felt that Allie did not like living under some else's rules and didn't like that his life depended on him being employed by people that did not appreciate his talent.
The group felt that Allie could be compared to Moses or a Christ like figure because on his arrival to Mosquito Coast he can be seen as a born leader. He is also a carpenter that could be compared to Noah. Allie is a man that builds a society out of nothing using only his knowledge and leadership skills. In the native of this country he inspires hope and belief. This is seen in the scenes where they are all working together to better their small community. It is also seen in the faces of the natives when he starts up his ice machine there expression could not be explained as anything else as awe. The group felt that Allie created his own Eden and in doing so he created a somewhat loyal fellowship. Not everyone believed in his talents or creations and this is seen when he presents his ice machine to the farmer. In this instance he could be compared to Christ where not everybody believed that he was the chosen one.
This film could also be compared to a kind of Garden of Eden story. The group felt that with the destruction of the community at the end, it demonstrated how Allie did not want to share...
