Review Of Bowling For Columbine

Bowling for Columbine was an interesting documentary made by well-known Liberal filmmaker Michael Moorer. As the title of the film indicates, Bowling for Columbine covers the horrific massacre of students and one teacher by two students at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The issues at the heart of this documentary are issues that somewhat divide the political structure of modern America and the loyalties of the people within it. A good example of this is the issue of gun control in America and its relevance to the high rate of violence in American society. Moorer goes to great lengths in order to show the audience not only that America is by far the most violent nation in terms of murdering within a nation, but that in a sense, it is the abuse of constitutional freedoms that give way to the increasing violence experienced by this nation. Moorer also expresses how fear is a driving force leading our people to feel threatened and thus prone to violent acts. A prime example of this is the part of the film where Terry Nichols' brother, who was temporarily held in the Oklahoma City bombing case, was interviewed. Mr. Nichols not only showed indifference towards the situation in Oklahoma City, he seemed to justify the action as well as spout off at the mouth with accusations of government enslavement of its citizens and other accusations that seemed to be the ramblings of a mentally unstable individual. What is even more frightening is the vast number of powerful firearms and bomb making materials that this man is legally entitled to own.
Moorer showed how media influence had fed the fear of the American public by showing predominantly the violence of the day as well as somewhat glorifying the more violent acts by the circus atmospheres media tends to create around them.
