Oliver Stone is known for his ability to make films on controversial issues and films that are like no other. ... It is not only a war film, but it is a post-Vietnam War film. The post-Vietnam War film genre is defined by including the struggles that soldiers had among themselves along with the war they are fighting. Platoon acts as a metaphor for the struggle between the American public and the government. We will see how Oliver Stone uses formalist qualities in the film to help define this genre as a post-Vietnam War film to compliment Robin Wood’s theories on film genre.
