Paper On The Move, The Insider

1. The main moral issue faced by Jeffrey Wigand is complex. He must decide whether or not he will: A) honor his confidentiality agreement with Brown and Williamson and protect his family's health and way of life. Or B) disclose his confidential knowledge and information about health issues revolving around tactics the tobacco companies use to deliver nicotine in their products which is one of the biggest healthcare concerns of the century and could effect millions of lives.

2. I believe Jeffrey Wigand uses the Utilitarian approach to solve his moral dilemma. In this approach, one must act in order to produce the most satisfaction and the least amount of dissatisfaction for the greatest number of people. This is obvious when despite what "blowing the whistle" is doing to his family life, he decides that it is important to get his information out so people know of the dangers of the chemicals used to enhance the nicotine. He had many chances to take the easy route and back down from giving any information and to keep his life intact. But even after the bullet in the mailbox, the email, and his wife's filing for divorce, he remains dedicated to helping the most people which is what Utilitarianism calls for.

3. The main moral issue faced by Lowell Bergman is whether or not he should fight and risk his job in order to insure that the segment that Jeffrey Wigand ruined his life to do will get aired.

4. Lowell Bergman's moral approach is based mostly on the Contractarian approach. In this approach most moral obligations are based upon contracts and promises to be kept. In the small world of Bergman and Wigand, there an implicit agreement from Bergman that everything will be ok if Wigand agrees to do be a consultant on the documents and do the interview with 60 minutes. Throughout the movie from the court battles to the "smear campaign" by the Tobacco companies on Wigand's character, Bergman refuses to leave Wigand...
