Portrayal Of Male Vs Female Villains In Film

We live in a world that is entirely driven by what media tells us. Everyday we are flooded with idealisms of what is right or wrong. You should look this way, you should act this way, you should be for or against these views. Constantly people are telling us what to do. Unintentionally or not it is still an ongoing process with no end in site. Certain mediums for communication are fairly straight forward. Most however have hidden meanings that we decode unconsciously and hence, that is how we view the world. It is only when we can dissect these messages and look at them critically that we can understand how much influence media has on our everyday life. To make sense of this two separate films were looked at, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle and Tomorrow Never Dies. The first movie depicts a female villain and the other a male. Watching two movies side by side such as these allows us to get a concept of exactly how different Hollywood portrays the genders. This writing will discuss not only a general idea of each movie's content, but also a look at some of the most major contrasts between the portrayal of the sexes as villains in film.
The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, starring Rebecca De Mornay as Peyton and also the villain, is the typical modern day suspense. The twist of course is that the villain is female. Peyton is first shown in a meeting with many lawyers who are telling her she will not receive any money from her husband's death until all law suits are settled. From that point she immediately falls to the ground and gets rushed to the hospital and has a miscarriage. This whole scene is shown in juxtaposition to the family that "caused" this to happen playing at their home as happy as could be. Right off this shows the extremes in attitude that each are facing at that time. Obviously Peyton must get back at the family that caused all of this to happen to her.
