Mike Nichols The Graduate

Mike Nichols The Graduate

The Graduate by Mike Nichols is a pellucid perspective of innocence manipulated by experience: Benjamin Braddock dominated by Mrs. Robinson. That is to say Mrs. Robinson cunningly deduces Benjamin's psyche in order to impose her will upon him. "Benjamin, I'm getting pretty tired of all this suspicion! Now if you won't do me a simple favor, I don't know whatÂ…For god sake Benjamin will you stop acting this way and bring me the purse!" Specifically, Mrs. Robinson assumes a forceful role indicative of a parent's attitude when they require something of their child. However, The Graduate does not stop at equating Mrs. Robinson's forcefulness with Benjamin as one of her own. Rather, it defines the authority a parent utilizes to regulate their child's lives. The same can be said for Benjamin's parents attempt to vicariously fulfill their own wants and needs through his life. Clearly Benjamin's accomplishments are nothing more than a mantled trophy showcased by his parents to bolster their status in their "plastic" world.
