M For Maturity

In its outset during the 1950s, television provided America with a very cautious and not too revealing outlet into American lifestyle. I Love Lucy, a pop culture smash and a major contributor to the acceleration of television's popularity, had so many restraints during its duration that even the word "pregnant" was cut out of the script in the name of political correctness. Other shows like Leave it to Beaver depicted the typical family in such a falsified light that its popularity with audiences waned as more vehemently realistic shows entered the market. Today, when many of those restraints have already been lifted and as viewers remain weary of such feigned exhibits of family life, television is leaning more towards cynical, and more often than not, violent displays of "reality." In addition, such shows that embellish reality in the complete opposite spectrum that it used to be in back in the 50s invoke many to voice their concerns over its dangerous effect on society.
Academics S. Robert Lichter, Linda S. Lichter, and Stanley Rothman, who have long studied the influence of TV on American viewers, argue, in effect, that the reason for television's dramatic change over the years from "squeaky clean suburban" sitcoms of the 1950s to the "steamy miniseries" of the 1990s is mainly due in part to the "politics" of Hollywood. They argue that the New Left, a partisan variant that is the dominating theme for most television sitcoms, is depicting the external world, the real world outside the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, in a negative and unrealistic light. The New Left, which endorses alternative living, such as "sexual experimentation, feminism, and more egalitarian family groupings," apparently seems to "reflect controversial social changes and, by presenting them as legitimate, accelerating their acceptance across the country." This, in turn, actually creates a picture of life that "clearly does not reflect the status quo" which is threatening to...
