Main Street

The protagonist of the novel Main Street is the young college graduate Carol Milford. She is "small and exquisite" (169) but very "energetic" (2). Her hair is dark to match her eyes, which are always "observant" (3). She takes pride in her thin ankles and delicate wrists. The girls in her college dorm whisper to each other that she is "psychic" and "spiritual," (2) and they are amazed by her tiny body and lively spirit. Carol is a hopeless romantic who is passionate about the arts, and she especially loves to read poetry. After she is married to a small town doctor named Will Kennicott, she moves to his home in Gopher Prairie.
When Carol first arrives in "G.P." as the residents lovingly call it, she is disappointed by the "planlessness" and the "temporariness of the buildings" (43). She longs to be back in the city, but makes a conscious effort to get to know the residents of Gopher Prairie and to try to like the town. The people in the town at first accept her with open arms, calling her a "lady of manifold charms" (70) and a "very sweet, bright, cultured young woman" (123). However, many of the town's residents were "suspicious" (109) of Carol and criticized everything about her- the way she dressed, acted, and loved the arts, even the fact that she was friendly with her maid. They thought she was uppity, and thought that she was too high class for them. Carol's honest efforts to reform Gopher Prairie and make it more modern created many problems for her, including having lots of new enemies. She was the topic of many conversations of the women in the "in crowd." Carol felt that everyone in Gopher Prairie was watching her every move, and she became uncomfortable and bitter. The people of this small prairie town had managed to make Carol change her opinion of herself and the way that she viewed her life. After several years Carol couldn't stand Gopher Prairie any longer.
