Dead Poet's Society By: Brittany Peter Weir's Dead Poet's Society is one of those films which confronts burning issues without really appearing to. As an in-depth analysis of adolescent life in the late 1950's, its entertainment value is equally as prominent as it is message, a rare balance in 'serious' movies about teenagers. The families who send their sons to Welton Academy are the old-money elite of America and the boys who attend are as repressed as they are privileged. Welton is an exclusive preparatory school situated in rural Vermont and is concerned mainly with tradition, discipline, and honour, while its students are forced to play the roles of 'dutiful sons' and conform to it's rules and regulations.
