Miramax Films and its position within the Disney Corporation

Introduction

This report will be looking at Miramax Films, a subsidiary of the Disney Corporation. Involved in the development and distribution of major motion films, Miramax has come a long way from its humble beginnings to today, a member of the third largest media conglomerate (PBS Online and WGBH/frontline, 2001). This report will explain the activities Miramax is involved in, and movie titles produced. It will also look at the financial situation and placement of Miramax within the Disney Corporation, and also the way Miramax has impacted culture today.

History and Productions

Miramax Films was originally formed in 1979 by brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein (Hoover’s Inc, 2003). Shortly after “setting up studio” in a run-down theatre in Buffalo, New York, Miramax Films were distributing “The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball,” which cost them only $180,000, but grossed $6 million (ThinkQuest, 1997). ...

Miramax have always favoured “arthouse” type films, placing the company in an “indie” niche (Brennan, J & Fleming, M 1993). When Disney acquired Miramax Films in 1993, some conjecture was raised about the ability of Miramax to fit in with Disney’s rigid corporate structure and culture (Brennan, J & Fleming, M 1993). However since then, Miramax have gone on to distribute award winning films, with 38 nominations in this years Oscars alone, for films such as, “The Hours,” “Gangs of New York,” “Chicago,” and “Frida.
