Minority Representation In American Media

Many people treat television entertainment, in other word media, as an accurate representation of real life; mirror the characters of a society. Therefore, the ethnic characters portrayed on television can have a significant effect on perspectives of people as well as their perceptions toward other ethnic groups. Moreover, television entertainment and film influences the stereotypical images about people of color. Many people see TV entertainment as realistic. The forty percents say they learn a lot from TV. The twenty-five percents say TV shows what life is really like. The twenty-four percents say people on TV are like real life. The media is a powerful shaper of people's mind and images.
Therewithal, American media is not diversifying enough to satisfy other ethnic groups. According to CNN.com, Broadcast networks say that they're drawing up plans to diversify the racial and ethnic mixes on their shows, amid criticism from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and other organizations. Moreover, the NAACP says none of the big four television networks has a lead actor of color in the more than 26 new programs planned for the fall season. The organization is threatening a boycott and lawsuit. Of the 26 new shows on the four major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox) in the 1999-2000 season, not a single one starred a person of color and very few featured them in supporting roles. This revelation led to massive action against the networks by the NAACP and other minority advocacy groups.
I have gathered the percentage of roles filled by other ethnic groups, Asian, Blacks, and Latinos, to prove how insignificant their role is in the visual medium of the American media, despite its population size in America, and also to show that there is little representation of ethnics in television.
