Like Water For Chocolate
The key motif and most important aspects of this film are exemplified by food. Food is the foremost important symbol in this film. The food molded the character's personalities and intensified the majority of the drama. The opening scene was shot in the kitchen, the closing scene was shot in the kitchen. Food connotes the three main themes of the film. It connotes tradition because the characters were shown preparing traditional Spanish cuisine cumulatively for several generations. Food connotes love as well, because when the food was served at the table, it is time for the family to spend time together and bond. Lastly, food connotes passion. One example of this was when Tita made love to Rosaura's husband, then immediately after doing so, cooked red chili peppers. Another example of passion being illustrated by the presence of food was when Tita put certain spices in Rosaura's food because she was so inflamed with emotion over the sexual affairs she had carried on with her husband.
Another important aspect of the film was the humorous undertones, especially those associated directly with the characters. One of the most humorous incidents was when Rosaura complained to Tita that her gas was driving her husband away from her. This was shortly followed by a scene where Rosaura burped and passed gas in bed. After that scene she died of severe digestive problems. The characterization of Gertrudis was interesting and humorous. The scene where she came back from her journey with all the cowboys and renegades was hilarious. Also, the manner in which she treated her husband, like she was the boss.
This film was replete with symbols. Direct narrative and voiceovers were unnecessary to make the viewer become engrossed with the film.
