Log book Research and Planning To begin our project my partner Angela Hosanee and I carried out some research into the openings of existing thriller films. We searched the internet for websites that allowed us to read about and view these films. We showed a particular interest in such thrillers as ‘kiss the girls’ and ‘Severn’. ‘Kiss the girls’ relates mostly to our chosen idea for a thriller as there are links between the two narratives. ‘Severn’ is a prime example of the typical conventions found within a thriller opening as it involves excitement, suspense and a high level of anticipation. In the opening of ‘Severn’ we discovered that there is little dialogue and more visual detail whereas the opening of ‘Kiss the girls’ relies more on dialogue given from the killers perspective. A useful website we visited was www.reelmind.com which gave brief synopsises of a wide variety of thriller films, such as ‘Thicker than Water’, ‘Snake Skin Jacket’, and ‘Secret messages’, we acquired more information on this particular film by visiting rooproduction.com. Whilst researching these films we could see a connection between the storylines, they all have similar characters and features. Most thrillers entail ultra heightened expectation, uncertainty and nerve wracking tension. We tried to produce an opening concentrating on these elements. When creating a film the target audience has to be strongly considered. Whilst researching we found out that most thrillers appeal to males this particularly applies to the film ‘Severn’ which also targets an audience between the ages of eighteen and twenty five. This is because the conventions of the genre interest this group more as the characters are usually hard bitten, intelligent and powerful figures; this type of role is applicable to male protagonists in the Hollywood cinema. A sophisticated knowledge of genre is suggested as the target audience (in this case young males) realise that they should know what to expect beforehand as they are parting with money, they would usually explore this through word of mouth or a previous viewing (advertisements). The film would be aimed at a niche audience as only a small amount of people would be interested in thrillers within a large group of film enthusiasts.
